Heterochromancy

Heterochromancy is a first person puzzle platformer, where the player uses two gauntlets to affect objects in the environment in different ways in order to move further along their path and/or reach places they could not reach before. The gauntlets are red and blue and each affects a different number of objects in different ways, such as the blue gauntlet turning water into ice or vice versa. When both gauntlets are used together they glow purple, the color created from mixing red and blue light, and the player is able to give form to special objects. The title plays on this concept:

  • “Hetero” from the Greek word “heteros”, meaning different

  • “Chrom” from the Greek word “chroma” meaning color

  • “Mancy” from the Greek word “manteia” meaning prophecy or divination (In the common vernacular it’s used as a suffix to indicate magic, such as Pyromancy, meaning “Fire(Pyro) Magic”)

  • Thus the title translates to Different Color Magic.

  •

The title also plays off of one of the earlier forms of stereoscopic 3D, color anaglyph. Usually viewed with glasses that have red and blue filters for lenses, color anaglyph 3D is made possible by color coding a different view for each eye and filter them with the lenses. Thus a 3D image is formed in the viewer’s brain because each eye interprets that they are viewing an object from slightly different angles simulating depth. This is why mechanic that was designed for using both gauntlets creates new depth within the environment, such as creating a stairway, or opening a doorway.
